Nations League: England eye quarter-finals, format to change for 2028-29 cycle

England could secure a spot in the 2026-27 Nations League quarter-finals with a win against the Czech Republic. The competition's format is set to change for the 2028-29 cycle, removing League D and guaranteeing promotion for all current League D teams.

  • England could qualify for the 2026-27 Nations League quarter-finals by beating the Czech Republic.
  • The Nations League format will change for the 2028-29 cycle, consisting of three larger leagues and no League D.
  • All League D teams are guaranteed promotion to League C for the next cycle, and no League C teams will be relegated.

England are in a strong position to qualify for the 2026-27 Nations League quarter-finals. A victory against the Czech Republic at Wembley on Tuesday night would all but confirm their place in the knockout rounds scheduled for March 2027.

Thomas Tuchel's side currently sits second in Group A3 after three matches. Portugal is the only team so far guaranteed a quarter-final spot, having won all four of their opening matches in Group A4.

The Nations League format is set to change for the 2028-29 cycle. The new structure will feature three larger leagues, meaning League D will be removed. All current League D teams are guaranteed promotion to League C, and no teams from League C will face relegation at the end of the current cycle.

The 2026-27 Nations League quarter-finals will be played across two legs in March 2027. The semi-finals are scheduled for June 9 and 10, with the final on June 13.

Why this matters: The Nations League ranking will directly influence qualification for the 2028 European Championships, which will be co-hosted by England, Scotland, Wales, and the Republic of Ireland.
