Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has described the UK as "the Islamic republic of Britain" and the "first Islamic republic to get a nuclear weapon" during a podcast interview. The comments were made during an interview for Israel’s army radio.
Netanyahu praised journalist Randolph Churchill's positive coverage of Israel from over half a century ago, then stated: "Go find that in today’s Britain, in what is called the Islamic republic of Britain." When questioned by the host about singling out the UK, Netanyahu reiterated, "Yes, but you know someone said the first Islamic republic with nuclear weapons will be the Islamic republic of Britain."
Avi Dabush, a candidate for Israel’s opposition Democrats party, criticised Netanyahu for mocking a critical ally. Dabush stated in a social media post that this reflects "a horrific diplomatic failure, and an inability to rally countries in the world in favour of our interests."
Relations between the UK and Israel have reportedly been strained recently, particularly since Andy Burnham became Prime Minister. The Prime Minister’s Office did not respond to requests for comment on whether Netanyahu’s statement represented the official position of the Israeli government. The British Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office also did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
