A shocking true story of deceit and manipulation is laid bare in Netflix's latest true crime documentary, 'A Toxic Love Story'. At its centre is a web of lies spun by a former US Marshal and his wife, who orchestrated a campaign of intimidation against their ex-partner. The case has left a trail of destruction and raised questions about the justice system's handling of such high-profile crimes.
Michelle Hadley, a graduate student, was arrested in June 2016 on charges that could have led to a life sentence for allegedly orchestrating a campaign of intimidation against her former partner, Ian Diaz, a deputy US Marshal, and his new wife Angela. The allegations included sending anonymous threats and posting on Craigslist to solicit men for a 'rape fantasy' directed at the couple's home.
Hadley was imprisoned for almost three months before digital forensic investigators uncovered the shocking truth in 2017. Orange County District Attorney Tony Rackauckas confirmed that Hadley was an innocent victim of a 'diabolical scheme' concocted by Ian and Angela Diaz themselves. The revelations sparked a major scandal in their affluent Anaheim suburb, located approximately 25 miles south-east of Los Angeles.
The twisted plot originated from a financial dispute over a condo that Hadley and Ian Diaz had purchased together in 2013 during their relationship. Hadley had paid the £12,000 (approximately $15,000) down payment on the £400,000 (approximately $500,000) mortgage. After their split in August 2015, and Diaz's subsequent marriage to Angela in February 2016, the couple began receiving threatening emails.
It was later discovered that these messages were sent by Ian and Angela Diaz themselves, as part of a plan to pressure Hadley into abandoning her claim to half of the property. To further their deception, the Diazs created multiple online accounts in Hadley's name and used Craigslist to post and respond to 'rape fantasy' advertisements, directing men to their home.
They even staged 'hoax sexual assaults' before contacting the police. On 13 June 2016, police were called to the Diaz residence, where Ian Diaz explicitly accused Hadley, stating she 'needs to be in f***ing cuffs and in a padded room.' Angela Diaz made a 911 call on 24 June, claiming a man had attempted to rape her in her garage, presenting herself with a torn shirt and redness on her neck and breasts. Hadley was arrested that same day, charged with felony counts of attempted forcible rape and stalking.
The elaborate fabrication began to unravel when digital forensic investigators traced the 'Lilithistruth' email accounts used for the threats back to Angela Diaz. Device logs and IP addresses conclusively contradicted the Diazs' narrative, proving Hadley's innocence. The charges against Hadley were dropped in January 2017, and Angela Diaz was arrested. In October 2017, she pleaded guilty to 10 felony counts and was sentenced to five years in prison, also divorcing Ian Diaz.
