Network Rail has revealed an ambitious £1 billion masterplan to regenerate the York Central site, envisioning a substantial transformation of the 45-hectare brownfield area into a dynamic new city quarter. The comprehensive development aims to deliver a significant boost to York's economy and infrastructure, making it one of the largest regeneration projects in the north of England.
The proposed scheme includes the creation of up to 2,500 new homes, catering to a diverse range of residents, alongside approximately 1 million square feet of commercial office space designed to attract businesses and foster economic growth. Additionally, the plans incorporate retail and leisure facilities, cultural spaces, and extensive new public parkland, aiming to create a thriving and liveable urban environment.
Central to the development is a substantial upgrade to transport infrastructure. This includes a new western access road, designed to improve connectivity to the site and alleviate existing traffic congestion. Enhanced pedestrian and cycling routes are also planned, promoting sustainable travel options and better integrating the new quarter with the wider city.
