Visitors flocking to Scotland's Glenfinnan Viaduct are being warned to stay off live railway tracks as trespassing incidents soar, posing a deadly threat to both themselves and train passengers. The iconic bridge, immortalised in the Harry Potter films, has become a magnet for tourists seeking the perfect photo opportunity.
Network Rail is urging caution after a rise in people putting themselves at risk by walking onto live lines. Trains, including the Jacobite Steam Train, travel at speed and can be deceptively quiet until close proximity, leaving little time to react. Trespassing on railway property carries significant penalties, including substantial fines, serious injury, or even death.
Locals have witnessed a surge in visitors congregating around the viaduct for a glimpse of the Jacobite Steam Train, often venturing too close to the tracks to capture the 'perfect' shot. This reckless behaviour not only puts individuals at risk but also train passengers and crew. Network Rail is working with local authorities, tourism bodies, and the train operator to enhance safety messaging and promote responsible tourism.
The railway infrastructure operator has stressed that while the Jacobite Steam Train offers a breathtaking experience, railway lines are operational infrastructure – not public footpaths or photography sets. To avoid putting lives at risk, visitors must adhere to safety guidelines and view the spectacle from designated safe areas.
