This unified understanding centres on mitochondria, the descendants of ancient bacteria that exist in almost every cell. Previously seen as passive cellular components, mitochondria are now recognised as active participants crucial for brain function, continuously converting fuel into the energy neurons need for thought, ideas, and emotions.
