  • Patients receive a combination of physical rehabilitation and psychological support.

A new £105m NHS rehabilitation facility has begun using robotic technology to assist patients in learning to walk again. The National Rehabilitation Centre (NRC) at Stanford Hall, Nottinghamshire, which opened on 2 September, was established to help individuals with life-changing illnesses or injuries achieve the best possible recovery.

Brandon Wright, 22, and Nic Marsden, 29, who are both undergoing treatment at the centre, stated that the equipment has helped them regain mobility. Ali Wildt, innovation lead at the NRC, noted that the latest technology allows them to challenge patients much earlier in their rehabilitation.

The NRC, operated by Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust (NUH), aims to offer intense rehabilitation support to trauma patients earlier in their recovery. Patients typically stay for two weeks to three months, receiving both physical rehabilitation and psychological support.

Health bosses hope the 70-bed facility, which took 15 years to develop, will serve as a blueprint for care delivery across the NHS. The NRC shares its site with the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre (DMRC) and will receive patients from Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, and Rutland.

Why this matters: Health bosses intend for the state-of-the-art facility to be a blueprint for how care is delivered across the NHS.
