Major construction work has officially begun at Army facilities in Tidworth and Warminster, marking a significant step in the modernisation of the UK's Defence estate. The Ministry of Defence (MOD) is investing approximately £50 million across the two sites, with the aim of delivering enhanced infrastructure for military personnel and bolstering operational capabilities. These projects fall under the MOD’s Defence Estate Optimisation (DEO) Portfolio, a wider initiative designed to create more modern and sustainable facilities while releasing surplus land for other development.
At Assaye Barracks, Tidworth, an investment of around £13 million is facilitating the construction of a new Regimental Headquarters for 1 Medical Regiment, following the demolition of older buildings. This move will subsequently free up existing office and working spaces for The Royal Lancers, who are scheduled to relocate to Tidworth from Catterick in 2027. Ahead of their arrival, new storage facilities for The Royal Lancers have already been completed.
Meanwhile, at Battlesbury Barracks in Warminster, work is well underway as part of an approximate £37 million investment to modernise facilities for 2nd Battalion The Royal Yorkshire Regiment. Main construction, set to commence this summer, will see the delivery of a new Officers’ Mess, modern Quartermaster facilities, and an extension to the existing gym. The refurbishment of the Regimental Headquarters at Battlesbury Barracks has already been successfully concluded.
Brigadier Grant Kerr, Head of Army Infrastructure Plans, emphasised that the start of major construction at both locations signifies an important advancement in creating a modernised Army estate. He highlighted that this investment in high-quality infrastructure directly supports operational capability and improves the daily lives of service personnel, while also making efficient use of the Defence footprint.
Barry Ray, Programme Manager for the Defence Infrastructure Organisation's (DIO) Major Programmes and Projects Team, expressed satisfaction at the commencement of construction with Aspire Defence. He noted that the new assets, including the Quartermaster’s Stores, the Officers’ Mess, and gym extension at Battlesbury, alongside the new Regimental HQ at Assaye Barracks, will significantly enhance the experience of service personnel at these sites.
Both the Tidworth and Warminster projects are currently projected to reach completion by early 2028. This ongoing investment underscores the government's commitment to upgrading military infrastructure, ensuring that the Army has the necessary facilities to operate effectively and that personnel benefit from contemporary living and working environments.
