One of Europe's longest direct train journeys, spanning 807 miles, is scheduled to commence this month, creating a new rail link between key urban centres in Germany, the Czech Republic, and Poland. Czech private rail operator Leo Express will inaugurate the service on 25 June, with fares beginning at approximately £8.65.
The extensive route will run once daily in each direction, connecting Frankfurt in Germany to Przemyśl in Poland, a city situated just a few miles from the Ukrainian border. Along its journey, the train will pass through popular destinations including Krakow, Ostrava, Prague, Dresden, Leipzig, and Erfurt, offering passengers a comprehensive European rail experience.
Peter Köhler, CEO of Leo Express, highlighted the significance of the new connection, stating that at over 1,300 kilometres (807 miles), it represents one of Europe's most significant direct train services. He emphasised the company's aim to 'remove the iron curtains between Western and Eastern Europe', fostering connections between important European hubs and facilitating access to Ukraine. The service is also positioned as an alternative to existing operators within Germany.
Passengers opting to travel the entire length of the route will experience a journey lasting up to 18-and-a-half hours. The eastbound service, Train 232, will depart from Przemyśl at 1:31 pm, arriving at Frankfurt Airport the following morning at 7:53 am. The return service, Train 235, will depart Frankfurt at 8:27 am, reaching Przemyśl at 2:23 am the next day.
This new connection is expected to benefit travellers by enabling early morning departures from regions like Saxony and Thuringia to Frankfurt Airport. Conversely, it will provide a direct link from Hessen, Thuringia, and Saxony to the Ukrainian border near Przemyśl, where onward rail connections into Ukraine are available. The trains operating on this route will offer modern amenities, including Wi-Fi, power outlets, onboard refreshments, air conditioning, and a choice of seating classes such as premium, business, economy plus, and economy.
