A new cross-European train service, spanning an impressive 807 miles, is scheduled to commence operations this month, offering a direct link between major cities in Germany, the Czech Republic, and Poland. The extensive route, introduced by Czech private rail operator Leo Express, will launch on 25th June, with tickets available from an initial price point of approximately £9.
This new connection will operate once daily in both directions, making it one of the longest direct train services across the continent. The journey begins in Przemyśl, Poland, a city situated just a few miles from the Ukrainian border, and concludes in Frankfurt, Germany. Along its course, the train will call at several popular destinations, including Kraków, Ostrava, Prague, Dresden, Leipzig, and Erfurt, before reaching its final destination.
Peter Köhler, CEO of Leo Express, highlighted the significance of the new route. "At over 1,300 kilometres (807 miles), this is one of the longest direct train services in Europe," he stated. Mr Köhler further emphasised the broader impact, noting, "With this new route, we are also removing the iron curtains between Western and Eastern Europe, connecting important European centres and providing access to Ukraine. In Germany, we are creating an alternative to existing operators."
For passengers opting to travel the entire length of the route, the journey is expected to take up to 18-and-a-half hours. The outbound service, Train 232, departs Przemyśl at 1:31 pm, arriving at Frankfurt Airport at 7:53 am the following day. The return journey, Train 235, departs Frankfurt at 8:27 am, reaching Przemyśl at 2:23 am.
The new connection is designed to facilitate early morning departures from regions such as Saxony and Thuringia to Frankfurt Airport. In the opposing direction, it provides a direct link from Hessen, Thuringia, and Saxony to the Ukrainian border near Przemyśl, where passengers can connect to further train services into Ukraine. Onboard amenities include Wi-Fi, power outlets, air conditioning, and refreshments, with various seating options from economy to premium class.
