The Security Industry Authority (SIA) has taken a significant step towards improving standards in the private security industry with the launch of a new buyer's charter. Developed in partnership with the SIA's Buyers Special Interest Group (SIG), the charter sets out a framework for buyers of private security services to follow, with the aim of promoting responsible procurement and boosting professional standards.
The charter has received input from strategic leaders with purchasing influence, experience of procurement, insurance, and security, and reflects the realities faced by those responsible for buying and contracting security services.
By signing up to the charter, buyers commit to supporting responsible buying of security and promoting high standards, which includes strengthening professional standards and competence, promoting fair pay and lawful working conditions for security personnel, and improving collaboration between stakeholders to strengthen public protection outcomes.
The charter is available for feedback and is intended to be a practical toolkit that makes compliance accessible and actionable for buyers. According to Sarah Cork and Jayne King, co-chairs of the SIA's Buyers Special Interest Group (SIG), the creation of the charter represents a pivotal moment in the industry.
Michelle Russell, Chief Executive of the SIA, added that good purchasing and procurement decisions require due diligence, curiosity, and investment, and that the charter helps provide a framework for responsible buyers to make choices prioritising service, delivery, and quality over cost.
