New EMR strikes announced over train safety concerns

Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) union members at East Midlands Railway (EMR) will strike for 48 hours from 30 August and for 24 hours on 16 September.

  • RMT members will strike for 48 hours from 30 August and for 24 hours on 16 September.
  • The dispute with EMR concerns "safety concerns" with the new Aurora (Class 810) fleet.
  • EMR Regional services will not be affected by the strike action.

New strike dates have been announced for Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) union members working at East Midlands Railway (EMR). The strikes are over "safety concerns" with a new fleet of trains.

Union members will strike for 48 hours from 00:01 BST on 30 August to 23:59 on 31 August, covering the bank holiday weekend. A further 24-hour strike is planned from 16 September to 11:59 on 17 September. These follow three strikes on Saturdays in August.

The RMT union has been in dispute with EMR since April, following the rollout of the Aurora (Class 810 fleet), which it states has been operating with a "significant number" of faults. EMR previously stated that "no safety-critical faults have been identified that prevent the trains from meeting regulatory requirements for passenger service".

RMT members are also continuing to take action "short of strike", including refusing to work on Class 810 trains. EMR Regional services will not be affected by the strike action.

What this means for you: If you plan to travel with East Midlands Railway on 30-31 August or 16-17 September, your journey may be disrupted. EMR is currently assessing what services will operate on these days.
