A major new exhibition is set to offer UK audiences an unprecedented look into the life and art of Georgia O'Keeffe, focusing on the profound impact of her beloved New Mexico home, Ghost Ranch. Opening at the Courtauld Gallery in October 2027, 'Georgia O'Keeffe: Ghost Ranch' promises to reveal how the remote desert landscape shaped one of the 20th century's most significant American modernist artists.
The exhibition will feature nearly two dozen works by O'Keeffe, 18 of which have never before been exhibited in the UK. Dr Karen Serres, senior curator of paintings at the Courtauld Gallery, highlighted that the role of Ghost Ranch in O'Keeffe's artistic development is often overlooked in Britain. O'Keeffe, who first rented a room at the 21,000-acre estate in 1934 before eventually purchasing it, frequently expressed her deep connection to the land, stating, "I knew the minute I got up here that this was where I would live."
Ghost Ranch served as O'Keeffe's summer residence for decades and became a crucial source of inspiration for many of her paintings. Dr Serres noted the parallels between O'Keeffe's close-up flower paintings, designed to make people observe often-overlooked details, and her approach to landscapes. This exhibition aims to demonstrate how she applied the same intense focus to the stark beauty of the New Mexico desert.
Despite her international renown, O'Keeffe's work has had limited exposure in the UK, and her reputation has at times been subject to misunderstanding. Past UK exhibitions have faced dismissive critical responses, with some critics in 1993 labelling her work as 'commercial' or 'amateur'. More recently, discussions around her flower paintings have often been framed by interpretations of female anatomy.
The Courtauld exhibition seeks to move beyond these narrow interpretations, providing a comprehensive insight into O'Keeffe's artistic vision through the lens of Ghost Ranch. By showcasing previously unseen works and exploring the intimate connection between the artist and her environment, the exhibition offers a vital opportunity for the wider public to engage more deeply with her legacy and understand the true scope of her artistry. Ghost Ranch itself is not open to the public, unlike her other New Mexico home in Abiquiú, further adding to the mystique surrounding this pivotal location in O'Keeffe's life.
