New surveillance footage presented at a Utah court has shed new light on the events surrounding the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk last year. The images, shown during a preliminary hearing for Tyler Robinson, 23, depict him allegedly fleeing across a rooftop near the scene of the crime shortly after the incident.
The CCTV evidence appears to show Robinson jumping from the roof while holding an unknown object, just moments after the shooting on 10 September 2025. The footage was presented by David Hull, lead investigator for Utah's State Bureau of Investigation, who testified that Robinson's vehicle had been seen entering a campus parking garage earlier in the day.
Hull guided the court through the timeline of events, pointing out that the suspect had been spotted walking across campus on multiple occasions before the shooting. The footage also revealed that the individual had purchased food and entered a wooded area near the university before reappearing on campus approximately 90 minutes prior to the fatal shot being fired.
During his testimony, Hull acknowledged that at least one other weapon was discovered on campus on the day of the killing. He also confirmed that no shell casings were found on the rooftop near a suspected 'sniper pad', where an impression in gravel suggested a shooter had lain prone with a direct line of sight to Kirk's speaking location.
The defence team, led by attorney Kathy Nester, has raised objections to much of the video evidence and testimony presented during the preliminary hearing. They have argued that the footage may have been edited and questioned why those who originally filmed it were not called as witnesses. The prosecution is seeking the death penalty in this high-profile case, which has sparked intense debate about the circumstances surrounding Kirk's death.
Nester highlighted inconsistencies in the evidence, including descriptions of a different suspect on the rooftop and conflicting accounts of the vehicle allegedly belonging to Robinson. She also pointed out that some witnesses described a bald man driving the vehicle seen in earlier security footage, further muddying the waters.
