New 'Interrupter' App MeBeMe Nudges UK Users Towards Self-Improvement

A new app, MeBeMe, launched last week, aims to combat doomscrolling by delivering small, real-world tasks designed to help users cultivate desired identities and habits. Unlike traditional blockers, it focuses on positive reinforcement rather than restricting access.

  • MeBeMe is a new app designed to interrupt endless scrolling by suggesting small, real-world tasks.
  • Users choose 'identities' (e.g., 'lifelong learner') and receive tailored 'missions' to build positive habits.
  • The app prioritises user privacy, storing data locally and offering control over anonymous usage sharing.

A new digital tool, MeBeMe, has entered the market, offering a novel approach to tackling the pervasive issue of 'doomscrolling' and screen addiction. Launched last Wednesday, the app positions itself as an 'interrupter' rather than a blocker, aiming to guide users towards self-improvement through small, actionable tasks that align with chosen personal identities.

Instead of merely restricting access to social media and other distracting applications, MeBeMe encourages engagement with the real world. Users begin by selecting an identity they aspire to embody, such as a 'lifelong learner' or 'classics reader'. The app then periodically sends notifications containing brief 'missions' related to that identity. For example, a 'lifelong learner' might be prompted to watch a seven-minute educational video, while a 'chess player' could receive a suggestion to play a quick game.

The app currently offers over 75 distinct identities across categories including 'Mind' (e.g., mathematician, historian), 'Body' (e.g., athlete, dancer), relationships, and home-based interests like cooking and gardening. Users have the flexibility to select multiple identities simultaneously, enabling them to foster a diverse range of habits across different aspects of their lives. Notification frequency can also be customised, from daily prompts to occasional nudges, and a 'Break Your Scroll' feature integrates with Siri to read messages aloud.

MeBeMe was developed by Eric Wolfram, who initially created the tool for his son before recognising its broader applicability. Wolfram emphasises that the app's core philosophy is built on the idea that "small actions, repeated over time, shape who you are." A key differentiating factor highlighted by Wolfram is the app's commitment to user privacy; it requires no account, stores all user data directly on the device, and allows users to opt out of anonymous usage data sharing.

Currently available as a free download for iOS devices, with an Android version anticipated in the near future, MeBeMe operates without advertisements or subscription fees. Its launch reflects a growing public appetite for tools that promote digital well-being and combat the negative impacts of excessive screen time, offering a positive reinforcement model in contrast to more restrictive alternatives.

Why this matters: As screen time and digital well-being become increasing concerns, this app offers UK consumers a new, privacy-focused tool to manage their digital habits and foster personal growth without resorting to strict access blocks.

What this means for you: What this means for you: This app provides a new option for managing your digital consumption and building positive habits, potentially improving your focus and reducing time spent on aimless scrolling, all while prioritising your data privacy.
