Dale Caldwell, the lieutenant governor of New Jersey, resigned from his position on Friday, 25 September 2026. This decision followed the release of a report accusing him of sexually harassing a female staffer and committing other ethics violations.
New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill announced Caldwell's resignation on Friday afternoon, stating he had submitted it earlier in the day. Caldwell's resignation came a day after Governor Sherrill called for him to step down, following an investigation that concluded he violated state ethics rules and engaged in sexually harassing behaviour.
The 61-page report indicated credible evidence that Caldwell made romantic advances toward a female staffer's friend, attempted to secure a promotion for his girlfriend, and provided tickets to personal guests without reimbursement. Investigators also found that Caldwell advocated for his girlfriend's promotion to a senior leadership position, despite being under investigation and without initially disclosing their relationship.
As lieutenant governor, Caldwell also served as New Jersey's secretary of state, holding the role of chief elections officer. Governor Sherrill stated she would appoint Shirley Emehelu, the state's acting comptroller, as the acting lieutenant governor.
