The King has graciously signified his intention to confer life peerages upon 25 individuals, with a diverse group of figures from across British public life set to join the House of Lords. The nominations include prominent politicians, legal experts, business leaders, and charity campaigners, reflecting a broad spectrum of experience and contributions to society.
Among the most recognisable names is the current Mayor of London, The Rt Hon Sir Sadiq Khan, who previously served as a Member of Parliament for Tooting. He is joined by former Presiding Officer of the Scottish Parliament, The Rt Hon Ken Macintosh DL, and former General Secretary of UNISON, Christina McAnea. Alison Lowe OBE, the Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime in West Yorkshire, also features on the list, alongside broadcaster and social equity advocate June Sarpong OBE.
The appointments also recognise significant contributions in the legal and human rights fields. Barbara Mills KC, who will chair the Bar Council of England and Wales in 2025, is nominated, as are human rights experts Parvais Jabbar MBE and Saul Lehrfreund MBE, co-founders of The Death Penalty Project. From the civil service and public sector, former Cabinet Secretary Sir Chris Wormald KCB and former Chief Executive of the Food Standards Agency, Tim J Smith CBE, are set to take their seats.
Nominations from political parties add further breadth to the new intake. The Leader of the Liberal Democrat Party has put forward five individuals, including Dave McCobb, the party's Director of Field Campaigns, and Hannah Kitching, Chair of the Yorkshire Liberal Democrats. The Conservative Leader's nominations include entrepreneur and philanthropist David Ross, co-founder of Carphone Warehouse, and General Sir Patrick Sanders KCB CBE DSO, lately Chief of the General Staff, British Army.
Crossbench peerages, intended to be non-political, include The Rt Hon Sir Brian Leveson, currently the Investigatory Powers Commissioner and former chair of the Leveson Inquiry into the press. These appointments underscore the ongoing process of refreshing and diversifying the membership of the House of Lords, bringing in expertise from various fields to contribute to parliamentary scrutiny and debate. The timing of these announcements often follows periods of significant public service or political tenure, acknowledging long-standing contributions to the nation.
