Nicholas Charrington has been appointed as the new Lord-Lieutenant of Essex by the King. This follows the retirement of Jennifer Tolhurst, CVO, who stepped down on 2nd December 2026. Charrington, a former High Sheriff, brings a wealth of experience to the role, having held various positions in the county, including President of the Rural Community Council of Essex and co-Founder of Wild Arts.
As Lord-Lieutenant, Charrington will work closely with local organisations and community groups to promote the county and its interests. He will also serve as the King's representative in Essex, undertaking various ceremonial and charitable duties.
Charrington lives in Layer Marney Tower, a popular visitor attraction near Colchester, with his wife Sheila. The couple has four adult children and has been involved in various charitable activities in the county.
The appointment of Charrington as Lord-Lieutenant of Essex is seen as a positive move for the county, bringing a deep understanding of local issues and a strong commitment to community engagement.
With his extensive experience and knowledge of the county, Charrington is well-equipped to take on the challenges and opportunities facing Essex in the coming years.
