A new online referral system has been introduced by the Ministry of Defence (MOD) to enhance the accessibility of its Veterans Services. This digital platform offers a more straightforward and secure method for individuals who have left or are in the process of transitioning out of the Armed Forces, as well as those supporting them, to request assistance, information, and welfare guidance.
The initiative seeks to modernise the referral process, moving away from traditional paper or PDF forms. Users can now submit their requests directly to the Veterans Services team, who will then establish and manage their case. The MOD anticipates that most referrals can be completed within a few minutes, provided the necessary details such as contact information, service number, National Insurance number, and date of birth are readily available. Crucially, individuals who have not served can still make a referral on behalf of a veteran or serving person they are supporting.
Upon submission, the referral is routed to the MOD’s Veterans Services Triage team. This team is responsible for reviewing the provided information, classifying the level of need, and subsequently arranging the most appropriate form of support. This may include direct contact from a dedicated Case Manager, ensuring that veterans receive tailored assistance relevant to their circumstances.
This development comes as part of ongoing efforts to ensure that former service personnel receive the comprehensive support they require, addressing various challenges they may face post-service. The availability of a more efficient referral mechanism is expected to reduce barriers to accessing help, which can range from housing and employment advice to mental health support and financial guidance.
While the new online form is being promoted as the quickest and most user-friendly option, existing referral pathways, including downloadable forms, will remain operational. This ensures that individuals who may prefer or require alternative methods of contact can still access the services. The government's focus on digital transformation aims to improve public service delivery across various departments, with this initiative specifically targeting the veteran community.
