New research has unveiled a potential link between experiencing anaemia in mid-life and an increased risk of developing dementia years later. The comprehensive study, published in Neurology, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology, tracked thousands of individuals over decades, offering fresh insights into potential modifiable risk factors for cognitive decline.
The study, which followed 19,968 participants for an average of 27 years, found that individuals diagnosed with anaemia between the ages of 45 and 64 had a 41% higher risk of developing dementia compared to those without the condition. This association remained significant even after accounting for various other factors known to influence dementia risk, such as age, sex, race, education, and pre-existing health conditions like high blood pressure and diabetes.
Anaemia is a common condition where the blood lacks sufficient healthy red blood cells or haemoglobin, leading to reduced oxygen flow to the body's organs, including the brain. Symptoms can include fatigue, shortness of breath, dizziness, and pale skin. Iron deficiency is the most common cause of anaemia in the UK, but it can also result from vitamin deficiencies, chronic diseases, or blood loss.
While the study establishes a correlation, it does not definitively prove that anaemia causes dementia. Researchers suggest several potential mechanisms for the link, including reduced oxygen delivery to brain tissue, which could lead to damage over time, or shared underlying inflammatory pathways. The findings underscore the importance of early detection and management of anaemia, particularly during mid-life, as a potential strategy to mitigate future dementia risk.
Currently, there are approximately 944,000 people living with dementia in the UK, a figure projected to rise to 1.1 million by 2030. With no cure for most forms of dementia, identifying and addressing modifiable risk factors is a critical area of public health focus. The NHS provides guidance on diagnosing and treating anaemia, often involving dietary changes, iron supplements, or addressing underlying causes.
Experts stress that individuals experiencing symptoms of anaemia should consult their GP for diagnosis and appropriate management. This research adds to a growing body of evidence highlighting the interconnectedness of overall physical health and long-term cognitive well-being.
