New regulations effective from September 2026 will limit the number of compulsory branded uniform and PE items schools in England can require. Primary schools will be restricted to three branded items, while middle and secondary schools can require four, provided one is a tie. This limit includes branded PE kits, bags, and seasonal items, with other uniform components expected to be available as cheaper, generic alternatives.
Parents are advised to review their school's latest uniform policy to confirm which items are genuinely compulsory before making purchases. This change is introduced as families face significant back-to-school expenses, with after-school care in England averaging around £2,636 annually.
Additionally, eligibility for free school meals in England is expanding from the 2026/27 academic year. Children in households receiving Universal Credit will qualify, regardless of household earnings, potentially benefiting an estimated half a million more children. Families are encouraged to apply through official services, their local council, or the school directly, as automatic registration is not guaranteed.
Other support available includes over 2,000 free breakfast clubs expected to operate in English schools by September 2026, offering breakfast and at least 30 minutes of free childcare. Tax-Free Childcare can also be used for approved school clubs and holiday schemes, with the government adding £2 for every £8 a parent pays, up to £2,000 per child annually.
