However, new research suggests a novel scan technique could dramatically cut this waiting time by spotting areas of the condition typically missed by conventional imaging, according to scientists.
Endometriosis, a condition where tissue similar to the lining of the womb grows elsewhere in the body, affects approximately 1.5 million women in the UK. The average time from symptom onset to diagnosis in the UK is estimated to be between seven and eight years, a period often marked by severe pain, fatigue, and fertility issues. Current diagnostic pathways often involve a combination of patient history, physical examination, and imaging, with a laparoscopy – a keyhole surgery – frequently required to definitively confirm the diagnosis.
Conventional scans, such as ultrasound or MRI, can detect larger or more obvious endometrial deposits but frequently struggle to identify smaller or more widespread lesions. The new technique, still in development, aims to overcome these limitations. Researchers suggest it could enhance the ability to visualise these subtle areas, potentially offering a non-invasive way to identify the condition more accurately at an earlier stage.
Faster and more accurate diagnosis is crucial for improving the quality of life for women with endometriosis. NICE guidelines for endometriosis diagnosis and management recommend various approaches, but highlight that a definitive diagnosis often relies on surgical confirmation. Should this new scanning method prove effective in larger clinical trials, it could become a vital tool, potentially complementing or even reducing the need for invasive procedures to confirm diagnosis.
