UK audiences have a fresh selection of new series to stream this week, with offerings spanning high-octane thrillers, sports comedies, and gritty crime dramas. From a glamorous Las Vegas heist gone wrong to the comedic travails of a washed-up golfer, the latest releases promise a diverse range of entertainment.
Leading the pack is 'Lucky', available on Apple TV from Wednesday, 15th July. This thriller stars Anya Taylor-Joy as Lucky, a woman who believes she has executed a perfect heist alongside her lover, Cary (Drew Starkey). However, she awakens to find herself alone, the money gone, and the original owners – including mob boss Priscilla, played by Annette Bening – hot on her trail, alongside the Feds. The series is described as an edgy and twisty chase, promising constant action from its opening episode, though viewers may need to suspend disbelief for some plot points.
Meanwhile, Netflix is set to release 'The Hawk' on Thursday, 16th July, a new sports comedy featuring Will Ferrell. Ferrell portrays Lonnie “the Hawk” Hawkins, a once-promising but now fading professional golfer struggling to maintain his tour card. The series explores his journey after a personal low point, intertwining his struggles with his son's emerging talent in the sport. This light-hearted take on the world of golf aims to lampoon the sport's more formal conventions.
For those seeking more dramatic fare, 'Save Me' is now available on Viaplay via Prime Video. Based on Dimitris Simos’s novel, this thriller follows Nikol (Danae Skiadi) as she returns to her remote Greek hometown after a parent's death, only to find herself embroiled in a mystery when her sister disappears. A local detective shares her suspicions that a serial killer may be at large, adding a dark edge to the sun-drenched setting.
Crime drama enthusiasts can look forward to 'The Westies', arriving on MGM+ via Prime Video from Sunday, 12th July. Set in early 1980s New York, the series delves into the notorious Irish gang, the Westies, who carved out a formidable presence in Hell’s Kitchen despite being heavily outnumbered by the mafia. JK Simmons stars as Eamon Sweeney, the gang's ruthless leader, who grapples with controlling his members' brutality while attempting to negotiate a property deal with Italian organised crime.
Further additions include 'RJ Decker', a Disney+ comedy-drama available from Tuesday, 14th July, featuring Scott Speedman as a down-on-his-luck private investigator in Florida. And for an unlikely premise, 'Ride Or Die' on Prime Video, from Wednesday, 15th July, stars Hannah Waddingham and Octavia Spencer as best friends, one of whom turns out to be a skilled assassin, leading to a clash between loyalty and a shadowy organisation.
