A new rapid technology assessment (RTA) is currently investigating the potential of advanced composite materials to bolster the UK's efforts in adapting to the escalating challenges of climate change. The study aims to identify how these innovative materials can be effectively deployed across various sectors to enhance resilience against extreme weather events and environmental shifts.
Advanced composites, often lightweight yet exceptionally strong, are engineered materials formed from two or more constituent materials with significantly different physical or chemical properties which remain separate and distinct at the macroscopic or microscopic level within the finished structure. Their unique properties, such as high strength-to-weight ratio, durability, and resistance to corrosion, make them attractive candidates for applications ranging from flood defences and resilient infrastructure to renewable energy systems.
The RTA process is designed to quickly evaluate emerging technologies, assessing their feasibility, benefits, risks, and potential for widespread adoption. In the context of climate adaptation, this assessment will critically examine the lifecycle of advanced composites, considering factors such as their environmental impact during production and disposal, as well as their long-term performance in harsh conditions.
