The initiative is part of a joint venture that includes the US-based diagnostics company Co-Diagnostics, focusing on developing more effective and accessible diagnostic tools for TB, which remains a major public health challenge worldwide.
Tuberculosis, caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis, primarily affects the lungs but can impact other parts of the body. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), TB is one of the top infectious killers globally, responsible for millions of illnesses and deaths each year. The commencement of these clinical studies in India, a country with a high TB burden, is strategically important for evaluating the test's efficacy in real-world conditions where it is most needed.
Current diagnostic methods for TB include sputum smear microscopy, culture tests, and molecular tests.
