A group of climate scientists has released a new tool designed to detail the possible consequences of carbon emissions. The Carbon Impacts Tracer uses peer-reviewed studies to estimate the impact of every megatonne of emissions on people and the environment.
Scientists have consistently stated that every tonne of carbon dioxide contributes to global warming, and even small increases in temperature are significant. The new tool aims to illustrate these impacts in detail.
For example, the tool predicts that 809 million tonnes of emissions could lead to an estimated 107 deaths in Europe, place 41,800 additional people into extreme poverty, result in 19.4 square kilometres of additional glacier area lost, and cause 38.8 million additional heavy labour hours to be lost annually.
