New university students offered health and cooking advice

First-time university students are being offered practical advice on managing their health and cooking for themselves, according to a recent guide.

  • Students are advised to register with a GP at their new address and ensure vaccinations are up to date.
  • Guidance includes basic food hygiene and suggestions for simple, nutritious meals.
  • Pharmacists and NHS 111 are highlighted as resources for common health issues.

New university students living away from home for the first time are receiving guidance on essential life skills, including food preparation and health management. The advice covers basic food hygiene, such as proper refrigeration and avoiding cross-contamination, and suggests a repertoire of simple meals like omelettes, bolognese, or pesto pasta with added vegetables.

On health, students are encouraged to register with a GP at their new address, with many university campuses offering student health centres. Dr Imogen Bloor, a retired GP, advises students to ensure all vaccinations, particularly for meningitis B and tetanus, are up to date before leaving home. She also recommends taking sufficient medication for existing conditions to avoid urgent GP registration.

For minor ailments, pharmacists can offer treatment and advice for conditions ranging from hay fever to urinary tract infections. NHS 111 is also suggested for guidance and signposting to appropriate services. Students are advised to seek medical attention for severe symptoms such as headaches not relieved by pain relief, confusion, uncontrolled vomiting, or a non-fading rash.

What this means for you: If you are a new university student, you are advised to register with a GP at your new address and ensure your vaccinations are up to date. You can also use pharmacists and NHS 111 for health advice.
