New York State is embarking on an ambitious journey to explore a potential joint bid to host a future Winter Olympic Games, with the historic winter sports hub of Lake Placid and the global metropolis of New York City envisioned as co-hosts. The office of Governor Kathy Hochul announced on Monday the establishment of an exploratory committee tasked with assessing the viability of such an undertaking, marking the initial step in a potentially lengthy process.
This proposed dual-hosting model draws parallels with the approach adopted by Milan and Cortina for the upcoming Games. While no specific year has yet been targeted, the earliest realistic opportunity for New York to stage the Winter Olympics would be 2042. This timeline is influenced by the fact that Salt Lake City is already slated to host in 2034, and Switzerland has emerged as the preferred bidder for the 2038 event, with the 2030 Games scheduled for the French Alps.
Governor Hochul has publicly expressed her support for the initiative, stating that "the time is now to return the Olympic flame back to New York." Lake Placid holds a significant place in Olympic history, having previously hosted the Winter Games in both 1932 and 1980, the latter being famous for the "Miracle on Ice" ice hockey victory. Furthermore, Lake Placid recently served as an emergency backup venue for sliding sports during the most recent Winter Games, demonstrating its continued infrastructure and capability.
A recent climate change study has also highlighted Lake Placid as one of the few former host cities projected to retain sufficiently reliable weather conditions for the Games by 2050. This factor could prove crucial in an era where the environmental impact and feasibility of winter sports events are increasingly scrutinised.
The newly formed exploratory committee, which is being led by Ashley Walden, President and CEO of the Olympic Regional Development Authority, is expected to take approximately a year to complete its comprehensive assessment. It is important to note that the formation of this committee does not constitute an official bid at this stage, but rather represents a detailed fact-finding and planning phase before any formal commitment.
