New York offers college admission to students disenrolled from Howard University

New York residents disenrolled from Howard University for missed tuition payments can now seek admission at CUNY and SUNY for the fall 2026 semester.

  • More than 500 first-year students were withdrawn from Howard University in late July for missed tuition payments.
  • New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced on July 27 that affected New Yorkers can apply to CUNY and SUNY.
  • Expedited late admissions review will be offered at several SUNY campuses.

New York residents who were disenrolled from Howard University in Washington D.C. have been offered an opportunity to continue their studies. More than 500 first-year students were withdrawn from the historically Black institution in late July due to missed tuition payments.

On July 27, New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced that affected New Yorkers can seek admission at the City University of New York (CUNY) and the State University of New York (SUNY) for the fall 2026 semester. Students will be offered expedited late admissions review at SUNY campuses including Buffalo, Albany, Buffalo State University, Binghamton, Oneonta, Stony Brook, and New Paltz, with other schools assessing capacity.

Governor Hochul stated, "Hundreds of students, including New Yorkers, are scrambling and scared since they’ve been disenrolled from their intended college just a few weeks before classes are set to begin." She added that New York is ready to welcome these students.

Howard University reported that 502 students did not submit tuition payments by the July 10 deadline, despite notifications beginning in March. However, some students have claimed on social media that they did not receive these notifications. This follows a similar situation last year where hundreds of students faced issues registering for fall 2025 classes due to overdue balances.

Why this matters: This initiative provides an alternative for New York students whose higher education plans were disrupted by the disenrollment from Howard University.

What this means for you: If you are a New York resident disenrolled from Howard University, you may be eligible for expedited admission review at CUNY and SUNY for the fall 2026 semester.
