NHS begins flu vaccinations for children and pregnant women

The NHS has started its flu vaccination programme for children and pregnant women today, 1 September 2026, ahead of the winter period.

  • Millions of children and pregnant women are eligible for flu vaccinations from today.
  • Most school-aged children will receive their flu vaccine at school, while parents of two- and three-year-olds and children in clinical risk groups will be invited to their GP practice.
  • Pregnant women can get their flu jab at any stage of pregnancy through their maternity team, GP practice, or participating pharmacy.

The NHS has launched the first phase of its flu vaccination programme today, 1 September 2026, making jabs available for millions of children and pregnant women. This initiative aims to protect families before winter, when flu typically peaks in December and January.

NHS teams are facilitating access to vaccinations through various methods, including community outreach, high street pharmacies, and mobile vans. Flu can lead to serious illness, with thousands of children requiring hospital care each winter and pregnant women facing a higher risk of severe complications.

Children are offered the vaccine from September because the virus often spreads rapidly among younger age groups. Vaccinating children also helps to reduce the spread of flu to more vulnerable individuals, such as babies, grandparents, and pregnant women.

Other eligible groups, including people aged 65 and over and those with certain long-term conditions, will begin receiving their flu vaccinations from 1 October.

Why this matters: Vaccinations play a vital role in protecting those most at risk from flu and are crucial for relieving pressures on the NHS over the winter months.

What this means for you: If you are pregnant, you can speak to your maternity team, GP, or community pharmacy about getting protected. If your child is eligible, you should take up the offer when it comes.
