A 16-year-old from Doncaster who weighed 21 stone (136kg) at just 12 years old has spoken about her remarkable journey to a healthier life, thanks to a specialist NHS clinic. Ibbie's story highlights the profound impact of childhood obesity on mental health and the importance of early intervention in preventing long-term complications.
Ibbie's weight gain during the Covid-19 lockdowns led to emotional distress, bullying, and self-harm. At her heaviest, she faced serious health warnings, including a potential need for a liver transplant and a high risk of developing diabetes. Her experience is not isolated – data from the National Child Measurement Programme shows that in Doncaster, around one in four children starting school are classified as overweight or obese, rising to over a third (33%) by age 11.
The Complications of Excess Weight programme at Sheffield Children's Hospital provided Ibbie with crucial psychological support, dietary changes, and weight loss injections. She praised the kindness and understanding she received from the multidisciplinary team, which included doctors, nurses, psychologists, social workers, and dietitians. A family support worker also played a vital role in educating her parents on nutrition.
Dr Dita Aswani, a consultant paediatrician specialising in diabetes and weight management for children, emphasised that medication, including injections, is prescribed and monitored by specialists to ensure safety and effectiveness. Ibbie's experience reflects the wider public health challenge of childhood obesity, which affects not just individuals but also their families and communities.
Four years on from her initial referral, Ibbie has been discharged from the clinic, weighing around 15 stone (93kg). Her health has significantly improved, eliminating the need for a liver transplant and resolving any underlying health issues. She expressed immense gratitude for the support, stating, “I truly couldn't have achieved this without them.” Now, she enjoys running, days out, and walking her family dog, embodying a newfound confidence and improved mental health.
This individual success story underscores the critical role of early intervention and comprehensive support programmes in addressing the complex issue of childhood obesity across the UK. It demonstrates that with the right help and support, young people can overcome significant challenges and achieve a healthier, happier life.
