An analysis by NHS England suggests that the Optica discharge tool has led to a 14.1–14.9 per cent reduction in delay-days for long-stay patients. Optica, built by North of England Care System Support on the NHS Federated Data Platform, aims to assist with complex patient discharges.
This finding comes after the Health Foundation published an analysis stating "no noticeable improvement" in discharge delays from using Optica. However, NHS England's analysis focused specifically on long-stay patients, for whom the tool was reportedly designed.
The wider NHS Federated Data Platform has also shown other benefits. Trusts utilising its theatre tool have reported 110,000 additional operations since its implementation. Additionally, Trusts using its cancer tool have observed a 6.8 per cent improvement against the 28-day diagnosis standard.
The programme currently holds a green delivery rating, one of 30 among over 200 major government projects. It is forecast to return £5 for every £1 spent.
