NHS supply lorry drivers to strike over pay dispute

Lorry drivers who deliver medical equipment to hospitals across England are set to strike after rejecting a 4% pay offer.

  • Drivers employed by GXO will stage five walkouts from October 13 to November 12.
  • The strikes will affect depots in Tyne and Wear, Derbyshire, Yorkshire, Kent, Warwickshire, and Suffolk.
  • GXO runs the NHS supply chain contract for SCCL, which is wholly owned by NHS England.

Lorry drivers responsible for delivering medical equipment to hospitals across England are planning a series of strikes in a dispute over pay. The drivers, employed by GXO, have rejected a 4% pay offer.

Union members will stage five walkouts, with dates scheduled for October 13-15, 20-22, 27-29, and November 3-5 and 10-12. The industrial action will affect depots in Tyne and Wear, Derbyshire, Yorkshire, Kent, Warwickshire, and Suffolk.

GXO operates the NHS supply chain contract for Supply Chain Coordination Limited (SCCL), a company wholly owned by NHS England. The drivers deliver general equipment such as bandages, dressings, gowns, gloves, and needles.

Unite regional officer Phil Silkstone stated that strike action could still be avoided if a deal acceptable to members is reached. Both NHS Supply Chain and GXO have indicated they have "robust contingency plans" to minimise disruption, with GXO adding that patient care remains of paramount importance.

Why this matters: The strikes could potentially disrupt the delivery of essential medical equipment to hospitals across England.
