Nico Gonzalez made a significant impact on his Newcastle United debut, playing a decisive role in their 2-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur. The midfielder, signed from Manchester City, provided a glorious diagonal pass that led to Anthony Elanga's opening goal.
The Spaniard's pass found right-back Amar Dedic, whose header set up Elanga to swivel and fire home. Just minutes later, Yoane Wissa cleverly flicked in Newcastle's second goal from a corner, securing the win.
Tottenham, who paraded £300m of new signings before kick-off and gave a debut to striker Omar Marmoush, finished the game looking tame in attack. This defeat followed their 3-0 loss to Brentford last weekend.
Newcastle's manager Matthias Jaissle also gave a debut to Gonzalez, who had joined City in a £50m transfer last year. Gonzalez's performance in midfield, alongside Lewis Miley and Joe Willock, suggested he could be a key player for Newcastle, replacing some of the composure and control lost earlier in the transfer window.
