The devastating fire that swept through Bicester Motion in May 2025, claiming the lives of three people and injuring two firefighters, has been met with a sombre conclusion: no criminal charges will be brought. The investigation, led by Thames Valley Police's (TVP) major crime unit in conjunction with fire investigators and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), has now concluded without any referrals for charging decisions.
Firefighters Martyn Sadler, 38, and Jennie Logan, 30, tragically lost their lives alongside Dave Chester, a father-of-two, when a major emergency response was mobilised after the fire engulfed a former aircraft hangar on Buckingham Road. Two other firefighters sustained serious injuries in the incident.
Bicester Motion, situated on the former RAF Bicester site, is a significant hub for automotive heritage, housing over 50 specialist businesses focused on classic car restoration and engineering. The initial investigation into the blaze was launched as an unexplained death inquiry by TVP's major crime unit, working closely with fire investigators and the HSE.
Assistant Chief Constable Dennis Murray offered his condolences to the loved ones of the deceased firefighters and those injured, stating that their thoughts would "always be with" them. He confirmed that the thorough investigation, carried out in conjunction with the HSE, had been completed, and no prosecutions were being sought. TVP is now preparing a file for the coroner and will support the forthcoming inquest.
Tributes have poured in for Martyn Sadler, Jennie Logan, and Dave Chester. Martyn's family described him as "the true definition of a hero" due to his dedication to firefighting, having previously served with Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service and London Fire Brigade. Jennie's family highlighted her bravery and fearlessness right until the end, while Dave's family remembered him as someone who died doing what he loved – helping others.
