Ryo Uchimiya, a 51-year-old chef for the Japanese restaurant chain Nobu, was killed over the weekend in Malibu, California. A 16-year-old boy driving a Range Rover crashed into Uchimiya's parked car on Saturday at 6:50 am. Uchimiya was sleeping in his vehicle at Nobu Malibu, waiting for his shift to begin.
According to a Los Angeles county sheriff’s department sergeant, it appeared the boy had been speeding. NBC Los Angeles, citing authorities, reported no signs of intoxication by the driver, who remained at the scene and cooperated with police.
Officials stated that an investigation is ongoing, and no charges have been filed immediately. The California Post reported that the teen driver veered across the road’s fog line before hitting Uchimiya’s car.
Uchimiya was a sushi chef who had worked for Nobu for 25 years. The manager of Nobu Malibu was quoted as saying the "family of staffers" were supporting Uchimiya's family.
