The news was announced by Wells' family attorney, Ben Crump, who expressed the family's frustration with the lack of clarity surrounding their son's demise.
Christine Wonsley, Nolan's mother, voiced her concerns at a recent press conference about the initial findings, particularly in light of a report from a member of the Cajun navy that Wells was found face down and fully clothed. This detail appears to contradict images taken of the teenager before he went missing, which showed him without a shirt. The family also disputes Jackson County Sheriff John Ledbetter's early statement that foul play was not suspected, with Ms Wonsley describing it as premature.
The independent investigation has revealed some disturbing details, including preliminary notes from the autopsy indicating that Wells' body was missing its interior neck structures when received after the state autopsy. Dr Roger Mitchell, a former chief medical examiner for Washington D.C., conducted the examination funded by former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick. He noted significant 'red discolouration' in the tissue at the back of the teenager's head, which remains unexplained.
The results of the independent autopsy have only served to heighten concerns that authorities may not be providing a full picture of events surrounding Nolan Wells' death.
