Christopher Nolan's highly-anticipated film 'The Odyssey' has finally arrived in cinemas, and fans are raving about its stunning visuals. However, a major difference becomes apparent when watching the film on a specific format - IMAX. The epic retelling of the Ancient Greek myth is the first feature-length film in history to be shot entirely on 70mm IMAX film cameras.
Nolan has long been fascinated by the potential of IMAX, and he's finally had the opportunity to bring his vision to life. In an interview with The Independent, Nolan revealed that he's been aspiring to shoot a film entirely in IMAX since he was a teenager. 'It's been a very long journey, starting with The Dark Knight,' he said. 'That was the first film where we were able to go to IMAX and say, 'Lend us your cameras. Let's try this on things like the introduction of the Joker, the truck flip.' But we couldn't do the dialogue scenes because the cameras are very, very loud.'
However, fans are finding it difficult to experience the film in its intended format, as there are only 25 theaters in the United States with the technical capability to show The Odyssey in 70mm IMAX. These locations include Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Nevada, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, and Texas. While fans can stream the film on Apple TV+, many are frustrated by the limited number of IMAX screens that can showcase it in its full 70mm glory.
