A Norfolk village is taking drastic measures to protect homes from future flooding, despite its current drought crisis and a hosepipe ban imposed on the region. Caistor St Edmund's £35,000 'leaky dam' project aims to mimic beaver natural flood management techniques, using strategically placed logjams along Wash Lane to collect debris and slow water flow during heavy rainfall.
The timber constructions are designed to reduce pressure on existing drainage systems, which failed to cope with the major flooding event in December 2020. At the time, residents faced a "fast, shallow, brown river" in their streets, with sandbags unable to prevent homes from being inundated.
The Norfolk County Council initiative comes at a time of great paradox for East Anglia – declared the driest region in the country – where water conservation measures are urgent. Yet, residents report ground conditions as hard as metal, making heavy rainfall seem unlikely. However, this stark contrast highlights the challenges posed by increasingly extreme weather patterns attributed to climate change.
The 'leaky dams' draw on beaver ecosystem engineering principles, which see them naturally fell trees to construct dams and lodges, thereby reducing water flow and enhancing biodiversity. By replicating this slowing effect, the new defences allow water to dissipate more gradually into the landscape.
However, concerns have been raised that proposed large-scale developments in the surrounding fields could complicate the long-term effectiveness of these natural flood defences. Plans for a solar development have sparked worries among some residents and environmentalists, as such projects can alter rainwater runoff patterns – potentially impacting the very water management challenges the 'leaky dams' are designed to address.
