British number one Cameron Norrie has been knocked out of the Italian Open in the second round following a straight-sets defeat to Argentine qualifier Thiago Agustin Tirante. Norrie, the 13th seed in Rome, struggled to find his rhythm on the clay, ultimately losing 6-7 (4-7), 1-6 in a match lasting one hour and 45 minutes.
The opening set proved to be a tightly contested affair, with both players holding serve to force a tie-break. Despite Norrie's efforts, Tirante, ranked 137th in the world, secured the crucial points to take the tie-break 7-4. This loss of the first set appeared to deflate Norrie, as the momentum shifted decisively in favour of his unseeded opponent.
The second set saw a dominant performance from Tirante, who broke Norrie's serve early and maintained control throughout. Norrie, currently ranked 13th in the world, was unable to mount a significant comeback, eventually succumbing to a 6-1 defeat in the second set, sealing his early exit from the prestigious Masters 1000 event.
This was Norrie's first match at the Foro Italico this year, having received a bye in the opening round due to his seeding. His early departure from Rome comes as a setback in his preparations for the upcoming French Open, where he will be looking to improve on past performances on the clay courts of Roland Garros.
Tirante's victory marks one of the biggest wins of his career, as he progresses to the third round of a Masters 1000 tournament for the first time. He will now face either Casper Ruud or Laslo Djere in the next stage of the competition, continuing his impressive run in the Italian capital.
Norrie's focus will now shift to analysing this performance and refining his game ahead of the second Grand Slam of the year. The clay season has historically been a challenging period for the Briton, and he will be keen to make necessary adjustments to ensure a stronger showing in Paris.
