British driver Lando Norris has secured his and McLaren's inaugural victory of the 2026 Formula 1 season at a captivating Hungarian Grand Prix. Norris steered his car to a comfortable win, marking a significant milestone for both himself and the Woking-based team. The triumph was, however, tinged with controversy regarding team strategy, which reportedly left his teammate Oscar Piastri dissatisfied.
While Norris enjoyed a relatively untroubled run to the chequered flag, the battle for the remaining podium positions was intense in the closing stages. Red Bull's Max Verstappen narrowly held off Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli to claim second place. Antonelli's third-place finish proved crucial for his championship aspirations, extending his lead to a substantial 50 points over Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton and 59 points ahead of his Mercedes teammate George Russell, who finished seventh after a poor start.
Ferrari's race proved to be a mixed bag despite showing promising pace. Lewis Hamilton initially finished on Antonelli's tail in fourth position but was subsequently handed a five-second penalty for speeding in the pit lane. The race also saw early dominance from Norris's McLaren teammate, Oscar Piastri, who led for a significant portion of the first half. However, Piastri's strong performance was cut short when he was forced to retire from second place due to a gearbox failure, a frustrating end to what could have been a double podium for McLaren. Red Bull's strategy gamble with Verstappen evidently paid off, securing them an unexpected second place.
Beyond the podium finishers, Aston Martin enjoyed a more positive weekend, despite not scoring points. The team's new car package showed encouraging signs, hinting at potential improvements for future races.
