The North East of England is bracing itself for a scorching heatwave that's expected to bring highs of 28 degrees Celsius within hours. The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning, flagging up potential health risks and disruptions.
The region will bear the brunt of the extreme temperatures, with other parts of the UK set for milder but still pleasant conditions. In England, areas south of the North East are predicted to see highs in the low to mid-20s, while London might reach 25C. Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland will enjoy warm weather, typically ranging from 18C to 22C.
The Met Office is urging residents to take precautions, advising them to drink plenty of water, wear light-coloured clothing, and seek shade between 11 am and 3 pm. Pet owners are also reminded to ensure their animals have access to water and shade.
The warm air being drawn into the UK from Europe is courtesy of a high-pressure system. While winds will be relatively light, typically around 5-10 mph, the combination of heat and low wind can make the temperatures feel more oppressive. This could also lead to increased pollen levels, making hay fever sufferers particularly vulnerable.
According to forecasters, this brief spell of hot weather will come to an end by the end of the week, when temperatures are expected to return to more seasonal levels. For now, though, the focus is on managing the heatwave and keeping people safe, especially those at higher risk from heat-related illnesses.
