A Northampton man, Michael Thompson, has been handed a life sentence for the murder and rape of his estranged wife, Kimberley Thompson, after a court found he staged her death to look like a suicide. Thompson, 56, was ordered to serve a minimum of 33 years in prison, following his conviction at Nottingham Crown Court.
The court heard that Thompson killed Kimberley, 43, at their home in Pinewood Road, Northampton, in August 2025. The couple, married for 19 years and with two children, were separated and had initiated divorce proceedings at the time of the killing. Thompson was also found guilty of two counts of perverting the course of justice, having attempted to mislead investigators.
During the six-week trial, prosecutors detailed how Thompson subjected Kimberley to years of domestic abuse, including controlling and coercive behaviour, and physical violence. He made hundreds of hours of recordings of her before suffocating her in the early hours of 9 August 2025. Thompson had claimed they had consensual sex, and he later found her lifeless amidst tablets and alcohol bottles.
However, Kimberley's family and friends immediately raised suspicions, highlighting her history of abuse and noting inconsistencies in social media posts made from her accounts that morning. A post-mortem examination further revealed no alcohol in her system and only minimal levels of other substances, contradicting Thompson's narrative and leading detectives to launch a murder investigation.
Judge Nirmal Shant KC condemned Thompson's lack of remorse, noting his defiant behaviour during the trial and his refusal to attend the sentencing. Kimberley's daughter, Athena, spoke via video-link from the US, describing her father as a 'jealous, conniving, narcissistic villain' and expressing the profound grief and devastation his actions had caused their family.
