Northampton Saints have booked their place in the Prem final following a captivating 45-31 victory over East Midlands rivals Leicester Tigers in a high-octane play-off semi-final. The encounter, held at cinch Stadium at Franklin's Gardens, saw Saints captain George Furbank deliver a memorable performance, scoring two crucial second-half tries in what was his final home appearance for the club before his move to Harlequins next season.
The match was a true derby classic, characterised by a relentless exchange of scores from the outset. Saints winger Tom Litchfield opened the scoring with a try just 87 seconds into the game, quickly followed by scores from Leicester's Hanro Liebenberg and Freddie Steward, which briefly put the Tigers ahead. The first half continued at a frantic pace, with Northampton's Tommy Freeman and Leicester's Ollie Hassell-Collins trading spectacular tries. Litchfield completed his hat-trick just before the break, giving Northampton a 26-19 lead.
The second half maintained the intensity, with Furbank's first try extending Northampton's lead. Although Orlando Bailey and Hassell-Collins scored for Leicester, keeping them in contention, Saints scrum-half Archie McParland also crossed the whitewash with a well-worked try. Despite a late sin-binning for Craig Wright, Furbank sealed the victory with his second try, ensuring Northampton's progression to the final.
Northampton Saints had finished top of the regular season table after 18 games, setting the stage for this highly anticipated showdown against Leicester, who concluded the season in fourth place. The victory means Northampton will now head to Twickenham, a venue where they previously lifted the title in 2024, to compete for the Prem trophy. Their opponents will be determined by the outcome of the second semi-final between defending champions Bath and Exeter Chiefs.
The result marks a significant achievement for Northampton, demonstrating their consistent form throughout the season and their ability to perform under pressure in a crucial derby fixture. For Leicester, it concludes a season that saw them reach the semi-finals under Geoff Parling in his first season as head coach, but ultimately fall short against their fierce rivals.
