The 2026-27 Gallagher Premiership Rugby season is underway, with Northampton Saints entering as strong contenders to defend their title. The Saints secured their second championship in three seasons by overcoming Exeter in a thrilling final in June.
A significant majority of the league's directors of rugby, seven out of ten, have backed Northampton to retain the crown. While club captain George Furbank has departed, the core of the squad, including stars like Alex Mitchell, Fin Smith, and Tommy Freeman, remains intact. The coaching duo of Phil Dowson and Sam Vesty is also highly regarded.
However, the Saints' last title defence in 2024-25 saw them finish eighth domestically, though they did reach the Champions Cup final. Defence coach Lee Radford has moved to a full-time role with Scotland, with Jim Henry promoted internally.
Elsewhere, Saracens begin a new chapter with Brendan Venter stepping in for Mark McCall, who he replaced 15 years ago. Bath, after semi-final disappointments, will aim to bounce back despite a slightly weaker squad this year. Leicester Tigers, with Geoff Parling settled as head coach, are also looking to challenge.
