The launch of a groundbreaking affordable rent scheme in Northern Ireland is set to bring crucial relief to lower-income households struggling with the escalating cost of private renting. The new programme will see rents slashed by 20% on homes that would otherwise be out of reach, providing a vital lifeline for those striving towards home ownership.
Eligibility is determined by income thresholds: single-adult households with a net income up to £30,000 per year can apply, while two-adult households must earn no more than £40,000 annually combined. Communities Minister Gordon Lyons hailed the initiative as a "landmark" for Northern Ireland, describing its potential impact on the housing market and those it will benefit.
The scheme's initial phase involves a substantial £61.5 million investment in partnership with housing provider Maple & May, aiming to create 300 long-term private rented homes. The first development is set to be located on Old Eglish Road in Dungannon, with further sites planned for Newry, Craigavon, Lisburn, and Londonderry this year, and Belfast expected to follow in future years.
Minister Lyons expressed his commitment to expanding the programme's reach, aiming for it to have a lasting impact on alleviating housing need. He reiterated his focus on delivering tangible benefits through affordable rents, enhanced stability, and an opportunity for people to save and plan for their futures – all set against the backdrop of proposals to extend Notice to Quit periods for tenants in Northern Ireland.
