Northern Ireland Secretary orders independent review of Parades Commission

Sir Chris Bryant has ordered an independent judge-led review into the decision-making procedures of the Parades Commission following a High Court ruling.

  • The review will examine the Commission's processes and report directly to Sir Chris Bryant.
  • A public appointments process will also begin to appoint new commissioners, as one has resigned and others are nearing the end of their terms.
  • The Secretary of State stated that the current commissioners have his full backing during this period.

The Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, Sir Chris Bryant, has today ordered an independent judge-led review into the decision-making procedures of the Parades Commission. This decision follows a High Court ruling last week concerning the Drumcree parade.

Sir Chris met with the Commission this morning to discuss their response to the issues raised by the court's ruling. The appointed judge will be tasked with examining the Commission's processes and will report directly to the Secretary of State.

Sir Chris Bryant stated that while he is satisfied the issues are being taken seriously, an independent review is needed to provide assurance and consider improvements. He also confirmed that a public appointments process will be launched soon to appoint new commissioners, as one has resigned and others are approaching the end of their terms.

The Secretary of State urged all communities to support the review and to conduct parades and protests lawfully, emphasising that the current commissioners retain his full backing.
