A large-scale exercise will test the Environment Agency’s £7m Northwich Flood Risk Management Scheme this weekend, from 11 to 12 October. The scheme is designed to protect around 400 homes and businesses in the town.
The annual training exercise is part of the Environment Agency’s winter preparedness programme. It aims to ensure teams are ready to respond to potential flooding incidents.
The exercise will run between 5pm on Sunday 11 October and 5am on Monday 12 October. It will include the erection of 69 metres of temporary defences and the closure of 12 floodgates across Northwich. Partner organisations, including Cheshire West and Chester Council and United Utilities, will also rehearse joint over-pumping arrangements.
Temporary flood barriers will be installed at Waitrose, Baron’s Quay, and Dane Bridge on London Road. London Road will be closed to traffic at Dane Bridge, with an alternative route signposted. The temporary barriers are made from lightweight aluminium and are typically installed before flood alerts or warnings are issued.
Omoniyi Green, Environment Agency Operations Manager for Cheshire, stated that while they are hopeful the defences will not be needed this winter, it is essential for teams to be prepared. He also advised residents to sign up for free flood warnings online.
