A ban on face coverings in Nottingham city centre has officially come into force today. Police and community protection officers now have the authority to request individuals remove coverings if they reasonably believe they are being used to conceal identity for criminal activity or anti-social behaviour.
Those who refuse to comply could face a £70 fixed penalty notice or prosecution, potentially leading to a maximum fine of £1,000 in court. Nottingham City Council leader Neghat Khan stated that residents had reported feeling intimidated by people wearing balaclavas, skeleton masks, or other face coverings without a legitimate reason.
Khan previously told the BBC that the council is taking decisive action, making Nottingham one of the first cities nationally to introduce such a restriction. The enforcement will not apply to face coverings worn for legitimate reasons, including religious, cultural, health, work, weather, or personal safety.
Superintendent Chris Pearson of Nottinghamshire Police expressed full support for the restrictions, noting they will provide greater powers to tackle the issue. A public consultation indicated that over 90% of more than 2,000 respondents supported the ban, with some concerns raised about potential abuse of powers by officers.
