The public inquiry investigating the Nottingham attacks is set to hear its closing statements this week. Grace O'Malley-Kumar, Barnaby Webber, and Ian Coates were killed by Valdo Calocane on 13 June 2023.
Grace's mother, Dr Sinead O'Malley-Kumar, stated that she might "crumble" when the inquiry concludes, marking what she believes will be "just the beginning" for her family's grieving process. Calocane, diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, was sentenced to an indefinite hospital order in January 2024 after pleading guilty to three counts of manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility, and three counts of attempted murder.
The inquiry, commissioned in 2025 following lobbying by affected families, has examined Calocane's care and interactions with police before the attacks, the police response, and the aftermath. It has highlighted errors, including Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust's decision to discharge Calocane months before the attacks and police failure to execute an arrest warrant for him.
Several other investigations are ongoing, including those by the Independent Office for Police Conduct and a corporate manslaughter investigation by Northumbria Police into Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. The inquiry's chair, retired senior judge Deborah Taylor KC, has until May 2027 to complete her final report.
